Oil and natural gas

We are committed to creating long-term value in a low-carbon future

We have a diversified oil and gas portfolio in Brazil. We operate the producing Peregrino field, and we are strategic partners of Petrobras in the Roncador field, which is also in production. In addition, we are developing two projects that will be very important for Brazil: Bacalhau and Raia.

Our projects generate local value for the country, enabling long-term social and economic benefits. We invest in technologies and solutions focused on safety, operational efficiency, and carbon emission reduction, in line with our ambition to become a company with net-zero emissions by 2050.

Renewables

Brazil: natural resources transformed into energy

We see Brazil as a key market for renewable energy, with characteristics that allow us to diversify our investments in energy sources on the path to the energy transition. It is a country where we can put our purpose into practice: energy for people, progress for society, searching for better.

We are building a portfolio of onshore renewable energy in Brazil, with solar and wind energy already in production, and exploring future possibilities for offshore wind energy projects along the Brazilian coast.

The first solar energy project of Equinor globally is in Brazil – the Apodi Solar Complex, in the state of Ceará – and we are building the first hybrid complex of Equinor: Serra da Babilônia, in the state of Bahia. Additionally, our portfolio in Brazil also includes the Mendubim solar complex, in operation in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

In 2023 we acquired Rio Energy, a Brazilian renewable energy company taken over to be our growth platform in the onshore renewable energy sector in Brazil. The acquisition includes the Serra da Babilônia 1 wind complex, as well as a pipeline of more than 1.5GW of onshore solar and wind projects to be developed.

Generating energy to meet society's demands

We believe that onshore renewable energy is essential for our development as an energy producer. This means creating energy solutions that meet the needs of customers and the market. A central element in this approach is the commercialization of energy through our trading company, Danske Commodities, which has a trading office in São Paulo to support our activities in Brazil.

Learn more about our renewable energy portfolio in Brazil:

Apodi

Ceará, operated by Scatec (43.5%), in partnership with Equinor (43.5%) and ApodiPar (13%).

Apodi is the first solar complex in Equinor's global portfolio and began production in 2018. Apodi has a capacity of 162 MW, providing energy capable of powering 200,000 Brazilian homes.

Mendubim

Rio Grande do Norte, operated by Scatec (30%), in partnership with Equinor (30%), Hydro Rein (30%), and Alunorte (10%).

The Mendubim solar complex, with a capacity of 531 MW, started operations in 2024. Mendubim will produce 1.2 TWh of energy annually, equivalent to the consumption of 620,000 Brazilian homes.

About 60% of the production is commercialized through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), in US dollars, with Alunorte, one of the leading companies in alumina supply to the global aluminum industry. The remaining production is sold in the Brazilian energy market through our trading company, Danske Commodities.

Serra da Babilônia

Bahia, operated by Rio Energy, our platform for growth in onshore renewable energy in Brazil.

The wind farms of the Serra da Babilônia 1 complex, with a capacity of 223 MW, consist of 95 wind turbines.

In 2024, Equinor announced the final investment decision for the Serra da Babilônia solar complex, which is being built in the same area as the existing Serra da Babilônia 1 wind complex. This will be Equinor's first hybrid project in the world, a model that allows for complementary wind and solar energy production at a shared location.

The Serra da Babilônia solar complex will use the existing interconnection system and will not require additional capacity from the grid. It will inject energy into the grid when the wind projects are not using their full capacity, optimizing total energy production. Commercial operations are expected to begin by the end of 2025.

Creating Value in Brazil

Creating local value where we operate is part of our strategy. We believe that we can bring a range of positive benefits to the societies where we operate, always searching for better.

Sponsorships

Increasing Brazilians' access to cultural initiatives is in line with Equinor's objectives to create local value for the country. The company believes that, through education, sports and culture, it creates lasting local value and helps develop a better-empowered society for generations to come.

Currently, in Brazil, we sponsor the FIRST LEGO League, MAR – Rio de Janeiro Art Museum, Galpão Aplauso social project, The Republic Museum and Urece goalball institute.

Social Investment

Since 2017, Equinor has been investing in institutions and social projects focused on education for young people, such as Dream Lean Work and Trilha Empreendedora. In 2024, the company had also launched a long-term educational program in Rio de Janeiro, called Bem-te-vi. Through a partnership with the Rio de Janeiro State Government, Equinor is committed to using education as a tool to provide people from a local community in the city of Rio de Janeiro with better opportunities.

In partnership with Shell, Equinor have also been developing a project called Mar Atento, which aims to provide operational knowledge to fishermen enabling them to act in case of an emergence response.

Mandatory Projects with Local Communities

Part of the Brazilian environmental licensing process, monitored by the environmental agency – IBAMA, as part of the environmental license conditions which aim to mitigate environmental impacts associated with potentially polluting activity.

The Social Communication Project (PCS) aims to provide information and to be a channel between the company and impacted communities, especially social groups related to the fishing chain. Our environmental education project is called PEA FOCO and is focused on women of the fishing chain.

Research & Development

In Brazil, Equinor has been building a diversified portfolio in Research, Development, and Innovation. We have about 35 ongoing R&D projects in the country, focusing on oil technologies as well as renewable energy and low-carbon solutions.
