Algeria is the largest gas producer in Africa, and since setting up an office here in 2003, we have developed two of the largest gas fields in the country in partnership with national oil company Sonatrach.

Equinor fields
Together with ENI and the Algerian national oil company Sonatrach Equinor is involved in the development and production of two of the largest gas fields in the country, In Salah and In Amenas.
Equinor in Algeria
Equinor, then Statoil, entered Algeria in 2003 following the purchase of 50% of BP shares in the gas-condensate field In Amenas and 49% of BP shares in the dry gas field In Salah. These two deals were ratified by Algerian authorities in 2004 and we established our office in Algiers the same year. ENI acquired BP’s stake in these two licenses in 2023.
In 2014, we were awarded the Timissit Permit Licence in the Illizi-Ghadames Basin in partnership with Shell. The Timissit licence represents an opportunity to build on Equinor’s position in Algeria with material exploration potential. Sonatrach is the operator with 70% equity while Equinor holds a 30% share. The licence located in southeast Algeria covers an area of 2,730 square kilometres.
In Salah
The In Salah dry gas project develops seven gas fields in the central Sahara area. Production capacity is 9 billion cubic metres per year. First gas was delivered in August 2004. Part of the gas is marketed in Europe on the basis of a long-term sales and purchase agreement.
Equinor and its partners ENI and Sonatrach commenced production at the Teg, Reg and Krechba fields in 2004 and have now developed the four remaining gas fields Gour Mahmoud, In Salah, Garet el Befinat and Hassi Moumene located in the Southern part of the In Salah licence.
In Amenas
The In Amenas gas project is the fourth-largest gas development project in Algeria. It came on stream in 2006 and is located some 1,200 km from the coast, towards the Libyan border. Production capacity is 9 billion cubic metres per year. Operatorship is shared between BP, Sonatrach and Equinor in a joint venture.
On 16 January 2013 a brutal terror attack at the In Amenas facility claimed the lives of 40 innocent people, including five Statoil employees. More information about our emergency response and the subsequent investigation is provided below. Ordinary operations have resumed at In Amenas.
