Research, development & testing

The laboratories at Kårstø (K-Lab) offer testing services using real fluids for a range of purposes, including rich gas from NCS, sales gas from Kårstø, and condensate/oils. The infrastructure is tailor-made for testing within hydrocarbons, CO2, hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. In addition, we are testing underwater drones and compressors in our large pit, to mimic realistic conditions under water.

The testing services are provided to help optimize production processes and develop new technologies and solutions for the energy industry. The unique possibility to move from technology development to broad implementation locally enables hydrogen, ammonia and CO2 projects with a broad range of possible partners and close cooperation betweendifferent business areas within Equinor.

Testing services are provided for internal and external clients mainly related to process technology and large-scale testing.

Our facility at Rotvoll in Trondheim, Norway, offers a range of testing services, for example:

• safety cells for high pressure/high temperature testing
• laboratory facilities for analytical services
• small bench scale experiments
• medium and small rigs/process equipment assemblies
• wet and dry pits
• workshops,
• specialized test facilities for material testing, hydrogen sulphide, fluid properties, flow, and separation technology, enhanced oil recovery, and oil and gas refining.

Our facility at Herøya Industrial Park in Porsgrunn, Norway, is used for testing and developing new technologies and solutions related to carbon capture, hydrogen, ammonia, and e-fuels. It features the world's largest CO2 transport multiphase flow loop, which can also be run with real crude oils and gas/condensate. Additionally, the facility offers compact CO2 capture testing.

The testing and development of new technologies and solutions are aimed at contributing to a more sustainable and low-carbon society.

The facility is available for use by internal and external customers in the energy industry who are looking to develop new technologies and solutions related to carbon capture, hydrogen, ammonia, and e-fuels.

The facility also offers access to available hydrogen, ammonia, power, industrial knowledge, and experience both internally and externally.

Our facility in Bergen, Norway, offers a range of laboratory services related mainly to subsurface tasks, plug & abandonment, rock mechanics, geochemistry, MRI, CO2 storage, hydrogen storage, hydrates, fluid studies, PVT, and reservoir characterization. 

Laboratory services are establishedto help optimize production, improve recovery rates, and develop new technologiesrelated to exploration and production.

The laboratory services are provided for internal and external customers,mainly related to exploration and production tasks. The facility is designed to make it easy to adapt current equipment to new test applications.
