The Johan Castberg field is located in the Barents Sea off the coast of Finmark, around 240 kilometres North-West of Hammerfest. It is the northernmost field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The field gathers and develops the resources from three different oil discoveries: Skrugard, Havis and Drivis, and started producing in 2025.

At peak, Johan Castberg produces 220,000 barrels of oil per day. Recoverable volumes are estimated at between 450 and 650 million barrels.

Large on the surface, large on the seabed

The Johan Castberg field has been developed with the floating production and storage vessel Johan Castberg. At 313 metres long, the moored production vessel is undeniably an eye-catcher, but it is beneath the surface that the true scale of the field becomes apparent.

A total of 30 wells are distributed across 10 subsea templates and two satellite structures – a large subsea field.

The development of the Johan Castberg field has established important infrastructure in a new oil province in the Barents Sea, and new volumes have been proven after the plan for development and operation was submitted to the authorities in December 2017. We have made a further five discoveries that are being considered for tie-in to Johan Castberg, and exploration in the area continues.
